Strangelove: NEW YEAR'S DAY! [30 Dec 2009|10:14am]

sfgoth

[tomasdiablo]

Why spend inflated prices to get into some crowded bar on New Year's Eve?

Why risk life and limb with so many drunk drivers on the road, and so many idiots spilling out into the streets?

Screw that.. New Year's DAY is where it's at.

Friday, January 1st, Strangelove celebrates NEW YEAR'S DAY.

In the back room, DJs Tomas Diablo (Strangelove) and Bryan Hawk (Asylum - Sacramento) ring in the new decade with a look back at the best music from the 2000's. That's right - it's all new, all night!

In the front room, DJs Orko (Dancing Ghosts) and Daniel Skellington (Compulsion) revisit the golden age of goth, new wave, and industrial with the best of the 80's and 90's!

Strangelove is every first Friday at the CAT CLUB (Folsom and 8th), with different themes and guests every month. There's lots of room to dance and socialize, and if you keep dancing, we keep the party going until 3AM!

Drink Special: the Broken Resolution

The single gay and the serious jew... [29 Dec 2009|01:08pm]

maxmin
A find it interesting that two of the best movies this year were the similarly titled A Serious Man and A Single Man.

Even more interesting, both are set in the 60's, and both are about middle aged college professors, who are both 'minorities' (one Jewish & one gay), going through existential crisis related at least in part to loosing their spouse/partner, and without giving too much away, they have similar endings.

In essence, they're practically the same movie... :-p

What's happening is just what's happening [28 Dec 2009|02:56pm]

nonduality

[iamom]
Mark Otter included a nice quote from the excellent Shambhala Buddhist teacher Pema Chödrön in yesterday's edition of the Nondual Highlights (Sun-27-Dec-2009). In this quote, Pema outlines one of her favourite topics and one of the topics on meditation and daily life that I have found the most resonant for me personally in the past weeks and months. Namely, that the world goes on just as it is regardless of whether or not we attach our own judgment to it, so why not just drop the judgment and end the suffering inherent in our wishing that the world was other than how it is in this moment?

Fellow [info]nonduality reader [info]confliction took some issue with me about this topic recently and held my feet to the fire about how this concept might actually condone a willful and blissful ignorance towards real suffering that occurs in the world. From the perspective of radical nonduality, this is actually a non-issue: it is purely an academic talking point that doesn't have much bearing from a truly nondual outlook. Having said that, the reason why I keep returning to these themes personally is because I find that they're helpful for me in getting through the stress of my day. Invariably, I find that it's my emotional reactions and self-righteousness that gets me into the most "trouble" when I encounter stressful events in my day. The more that I let go of my expectations of "the way things should be," the more quickly I can get over perceived slights against me or what I perceive as situations that require "fixing;" in this way, I can bring a sort of lightness to apparently negative situations that defuses their negativity really quickly and lets me move on after just a few moments.

In my own personal life, this comes in super helpful in the rearing of my two young toddler boys (their 7-year-old sister is not nearly as challenging as they are in this regard). Unwittingly, my sons are fantastic adepts at pushing my buttons, and whenever I can harbour an attitude of acceptance towards their natural, childish foibles, this helps our relationship immensely. I can cultivate feelings of acceptance towards them for who they are at the age at which they are, instead of getting angry with them for not acting more maturely than their given calendar age. They certainly provide many opportunities each day for me to get frustrated by them throwing toys, fighting over toys, climbing up to the counter to reach breakable items, and all that kind of stuff. But if I deal with them from a position of acceptance instead of wishing that they'd act differently, it really helps my own frustration levels a lot. In short, it serves as a reminder to me that they're just sweet little young people who haven't yet developed a sense of logic or consequence to their actions yet. And who, except someone enmeshed in overly high expectations for a 3-year-old, could take serious issue with that fact?

Even though I've found myself in a myriad of inordinately stressful work situations related to my former profession in IT project management and software development, I can safely say that parenting has thrown up the most intense challenges yet for my own personal and spiritual growth. Some day I'd like to write a book about the lessons I've learned from my kids. (Not that that's ever been done before!)
Then you begin to realize that what's happening is just what's happening. Whether it's outside or what's being triggered in you, it's just what's happening. And all this other stuff is laid on top of it by the thoughts: the good and the bad, and the right and the wrong, and the should and the shouldn't.

So, what Dale [Asrael] said yesterday is, "When you break the identification with the thoughts, suddenly there's space." And I wrote that down because that has been my experience.

That's a hard one, but it's helpful to know it as something that you just know, that when you label thinking and go back to the present moment, being with the breath or the body sensations or sounds, whatever – coming back to the immediacy of your experience – there's the possibility of the very real, that moment has the potential of connecting with space, or opening up the space. Choosing a fresh alternative.

When you don't choose the same old way, the same old stale story line, then there's the opportunity for something new and fresh to present itself to you. The world can open up in an unprecedented way.

– Pema Chödrön

Ocean [27 Dec 2009|04:50pm]

[healingdrysuits]
Ocean

God cupped her breath of hand
and I, Ocean I, swelled with love
when breath of hand descended from above
and I, Ocean I, swept up to greet it
reached up sweetly, longingly to meet it
and felt the touch
of the open palm
and through this effort
became Wave

I was Wave
and felt the call of Moon
dreamed of white capped rollers
and the shore coming soon
fell in love with liquidity
and this ancient rite of travel
paused when I saw the surf’s edge
and began to unravel
collapsing into the trough
of my own momentum.

I became so many
so effervescent many
and we tingled with the touch
of sand
we danced together
under the moon
on land
I lay upon the Earth
and felt what was left
leave me.

Then God winked at the moon
and she pulled a silken leash
rolling back the ocean
exposing the beach
and I?
I left with the tide.

Kite [27 Dec 2009|04:47pm]

[healingdrysuits]
Kite

Earth’s breath blows
and I soar
wind’s strength grows
and I roar
with the fate
of the skyborne
earthbound.

Up here,
among clouds found
I see now
looking round
the perfect jigsaw fit
that puzzles from the ground
and I drift with the sound of sing
as God lets out more and more string
oh what wonder is this
how deeply flows
this gusty bliss?

At times
too much
seems to be the rule
and I wonder....how much string
is on that spool?

And I pray for the return
of good and bad
right and wrong
and the gritty feel
of dirt under my fingernails
a train back on the rails
a heavy train,
knowing where it’s going.

God answers the prayer
with more string...

Christmas [25 Dec 2009|03:12am]

doggiesushi
[ mood | exhausted ]

It's 3am and I'm just finishing up wrapping the gifts...

Um.. yeah... I could've finished up days ago, but I wasn't able to. Plus, truth be told, there's something to the ritual of wrapping at the last minute that I actually like - I have the house to myself, I'm watching the "A Christmas Story" marathon as loud as I want, I'm updating LJ, etc...

But, here I am, again... one more year playing Santa late in the night and then I'm utterly and completely exhausted tomorrow and I'm doing the cooking.

It'd be nice if I didn't have to rush like this or make sure everything's just right. Now that Lorna's turned 18, I think it may be time to break the news that there is no Santa Claus. That would take some pressure off. She'll be hurt, but I know she'll get over it eventually.

Enough slacking off. Time to get back to work.

My favorite albums of 2009... [23 Dec 2009|05:21pm]

maxmin
For review, my 2008 list from last year...

My top 10 albums of 2009:
#1. Prometheus Burning - Plague Called Humanity: Proof positive there's still life in the Industrial genre, Pro Burn have produced a perfect blending of Rhythmic Noise, classic Electro-Industrial and pure sonic experimentation to create the best album of the year.

#2. Nitzer Ebb - Industrial Complex: The comeback album of the year (decade?). After a 14 year break NE have produced an album that manages to both update and expand their sound while still staying true to their roots, producing an album as good as any they've ever done.

#3. Project Pitchfork - Dream, Tiresias!: But for Nitzer Ebb this would have been the comeback of the year album. True, they never went away, but they went through nearly a decade of lackluster releases (Though in all fairness, like with FLA's run of lackluster albums in the late 90's/early 00's, they're still better than what most other groups have ever produced). But with Dream Tiresias! they've produced an album on par with their classic 90's releases, including my favorite song of the year, Nasty Habit.

#4. Faith & The Muse - :Ankoku Butoh: Returning after a 7 year break, F&TM have created an album that while still ostensibly Goth, ranges from Ethereal to Tribal to full on Punk fury, and is to my ears at least the best album they've ever done.

#5. Cervello Elettronico - Process of Elimination: I still don't know what to call CE genrewise, since it clearly ranges beyond the Industrial genre, so I'll just call it awesome.

#6. Life Cried - Banished Psalms: I like Aggrotech, and this is my favorite Aggrotech album this year, in large part because of it's broader range of sounds, tempos and atmosphere than most other releases in this sub-genre, and just enough vocal processing to give that distinctive sound yet leave the lyrics intelligible, a big pet peeve of mine which many other such bands fail at.

#7. Rotersand - Random is Resistance: Probably the biggest surprise on my list, for those that know my musical tastes well. In short, I don't like Futurepop, Rotersand are most definitely Futurepop, yet I love this album. Go figure...

#8. Implant - Implantology: I'm not as familiar Implant as I should be, but after the excellent 32CRASH album I had to pick this one up, and I'm glad I did, as it's a stomper fully in the EBM tradition, but still modern, not sounding too retro or dated.

#9. Tonikom - The Sniper's Veil: Another cross-genre album, like CE's above but even more so, ranging from atmospheric soundscapes to driving beats in a most pleasing fashion.

#10. nolongerhuman - Antipathy: My other favorite Aggrotech album this year. Not quite as genre transcending as LC's album above, but a powerful and promising debut.

#11. Unwoman - The Keys: A digital only collection of cover songs, previews of tracks for her next official release and more, that despite its odds-n-sods nature is still a damn good fully realized album to my ears.

#12. Slayer - World Painted Blood: It's no Reign in Blood or God Hates Us All, but come on, SLAYER!!!

Two albums that should have been on my 2008 list:
Bahntier - Venal: I only heard of this band 2 months ago when Sharon suggested them for our special Noisescape Skinny Puppy episode, since SP drummer Justin Bennett is part of the group, and I'm glad she did because this band is amazing. While there's a definite SP influence they're by no means a clone band, with a sound all their own which was a nice change from so many of the cookie-cutter soundalike bands out there.

Left Spine Down - Fighting For Voltage: I have no excuse for not having gotten this album sooner, as I knew about it, and knew I'd probably like it, but better late than never. Simply said, this album is awesome, and along with Cyanotic they're leading a wave of post-coldwave/cyberpunk sonic madness.

Four EP's/teasers for 2010:
I:Scintilla - Prey on You
Grendel - Chemicals + Circuitry
C-Drone-Defect - Letters from Dystopia
C/A/T - We Are Still Alive

Birthday! [22 Dec 2009|08:55am]

doggiesushi
[ mood | chipper ]

I had a really good birthday yesterday, despite my attempts to keep it small (or non-existent... I've gotten weird about my birthday in recent years)...

On the getting part, [info]sugarcoatedlie completely surprised me by signing me up for the early February knife skills class at Mirepoix (a local cooking school, which happens to be within walking distance of the house). I'm super excited about this part since one of the things that keeps me from doing a lot of cooking is the prep work. We have a stupid-small kitchen which already makes cooking a bit of a PITA... being slow at the prep work makes it even worse. I'm kinda geeked that I may be able to start chopping things like a pro! Or, chop off my hand like a rank amateur... one of the two...

[info]jehzuhbell got me the Jamie Oliver cookbook based on his "Jamie at Home" TV series, which I think is my favourite cooking show ever. His cooking style and mine really blend well, and now that he has the huge garden in the backyard, it's even more so. What I like is how meats tend to take a backstage to all the great things he's getting from his garden, and (for the most part) his dishes are light and spring-y. I end up practically gnawing on the TV by the time the show's done.

For the record, the book doesn't taste as good as I expected, but moderately better than the TV does.

Day-wise, it was a pretty lazy day in the morning and we got out of the house around 1 to get all of our Christmas dinner/payday shopping done. I also made a stop at the Secretary of State (DMV) to get my license renewed because I'm a colossal dumbass and didn't renew when they started sending me mail about it two months ago. The Secretary of State trip was a bust because it was _packed_. Seriously - who spends their Christmas time at the DMV?

Oh wait - _I_ do.

Despite my initial wants to do no special dinner at all, Tiffany organized a small dinner with a few folks at Cafe Sushi where I ate myself into a coma. In the end, I have to thank her since even though I didn't really want to do any celebrations initially, I'm glad we did. I'm also glad that we kept it small since I was being weird and moody about the whole thing (not sure why); forcing it to be bigger wouldn't have helped. Thanks to everyone who showed up.

I also got about 293874091783978134567843765 birthday wishes on Facebook. I'll be spending the rest of my life responding to those, I think.

So, yeah... good birthday, and people like me, I guess. :) Now I'm off to work in a few after writing out a bunch more Christmas cards this morning. I'm a Christmas _machine_.
